TikTok sensation ‘Old Town Road’ just broke the record for remaining No. 1 on the Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart for 17 weeks in a row.
The country-trap smash beat the record set by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s ‘One Sweet Day,’ which spent 16 weeks at No. 1 on the chart in 1996. The last song to come close to surpassing this achievement was Justin Bieber’s remix of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s reggaeton hit ‘Despacito,’ tying with ‘One Sweet Day’ at 16 weeks.
On July 31st, the single also broke the second record of that week for having the longest stay at the top of Billboard’s On-Demand Streaming Songs chart at 17 weeks.
Mariah Carey happily passed the honor to Lil Nas X in an affectionate tweet below.
Sending love & congrats to @LilNasX on breaking one of the longest running records in music history! We've been blessed to hold this record with a song that means a great deal to @BoyzIIMen and myself and has touched so many. Keep living your best life! ❤ pic.twitter.com/3YorLCg3lx
