Biography

Greg Barker

Acclaimed as “a filmmaker of artistic and political consequence” (The New York Times) and one of the most talented American documentary filmmakers of his generation, Greg draws on his years of experience working around the globe to make thought-provoking and character-driven documentaries about the complex world we live in.

In 2009, HBO ran his award-winning documentary feature Sergio, about U.N. envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello. Described by The Los Angeles Times as “a documentary of exceptional power,” Sergio was acclaimed at the Sundance Film Festival and shortlisted for the 2010 Academy Awards. Greg’s next feature documentary Koran By Heart, also directed for HBO, depicts one of the world’s preeminent recitation competitions of the Holy Koran. The film was one of the most popular documentaries at the Tribeca Film Festival and The New York Times called it “an inspirational film of the unique experiences of Muslim children throughout the world.” Greg previously directed several films for the PBS series Frontline, including the renowned Ghosts of Rwanda, which examined the American government’s inaction during the 1994 genocide.

In 2013, Greg received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Non-Fiction Special for his feature documentary Manhunt. The film, an insider account of the remarkable true story of the CIA’s two-decade search for notorious terrorist Osama bin Laden, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and aired on HBO.

In We Are The Giant, Greg takes audiences inside the lives of several extraordinary Arab Spring activists as they grapple with the universal dilemmas at the heart of justice and freedom: whether to take up arms and fight, or to advocate change through peace and non-violent protests. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and received a limited theatrical release later that year. Working in concert with Amnesty International, the film not only garnered critical success, but also helped achieve the release of Zainab al-Khawaja, a Bahraini activist who had been imprisoned for her non-violent protests.

Most recently, Greg directed Homegrown: The Counter-Terrorism Dilemma for HBO Documentary Films. Premiering on the network in early 2016, the film tackles the real and perceived threat of homegrown Islamic terrorism through the perspectives of the friends and family of the accused and those tasked to fight it.

Greg holds an MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics and was on the jury for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. He was based in London for much of his adult life but currently resides in Los Angeles where he continues to work on feature documentaries, as well as his first scripted film, which is being developed with HBO Films.
