About

Douglas Hart started his career as the bass player for 80’s rock band The Jesus & Mary Chain. During his time with the group, he began to direct music videos for other bands, quickly making a name for himself as the go-to director for some of the biggest rock names across Britain. Douglas has created videos for the likes of My Bloody Valentine, The Horrors, The Vaccines, The Libertines, Paul Weller, Primal Scream, and the Mystery Jets, as well as concert videos for the Stone Roses.

Highly versatile and with a career that spans decades, Douglas has produced an array of work over a multitude of platforms. Creating films that are highly visual whilst keeping a strong focus on narrative.

Douglas has also turned his eye towards the short film medium. His first foray into short film was the highly applauded ‘Long Distance Information’, which is a touching and unexpectedly hilarious autobiographical observation of family life but has a resonance for anyone who is a parent or child. The film premiered at the London Short Film Festival and also won the Short Film Award at Rushes Soho Shorts 2012.

Douglas’ most recent film was commissioned by The Stanley Kubrick Foundation and James Lavelle for an exhibition at Somerset House, ‘Daydreaming with Stanley Kubrick’. Paying tribute and homage to the legendary filmmaker, the film entitled ‘Anywhere Out of This World’ sits amongst a unique and groundbreaking collection of works by some of today’s leading creative minds.

Not only a talented filmmaker, Douglas is also respected and renowned for his famous encyclopedic knowledge of all things film. His critical eye and understanding of the medium can be seen throughout his body of work, providing deeper and more thought provoking narratives. Check out Douglas’ top 10 films on Criterion, HERE.

Alongside Steve Mackey and Jeannette Lee, Douglas started the project ‘Call This Number’. Radically resistant to pop culture’s archival impulses, it is an erratically scheduled music show that is announced via social media, and only exists for those who know. It is filmed via cathode ray tube video cameras with an aesthetic that recalls 1980s cable television and Pirate TV. To date, they have clocked performances from the likes of Sleaford Mods, Peaches, Young Fathers, and Bobby Gillespie. They have also collaborated with Love magazine on fashion projects and created campaigns for Miu Miu and Schiaparelli.
