About

Matt Lambert is a filmmaker and photographer whose gripping, sensual work has found worldwide acclaim. A Los Angeles native living in Berlin, his craft is colored by his formal training in fine arts and animation, with works across narrative film, experimental documentary, music, video, and fashion.

Tribeca Film Festival named Matt one of the ten filmmakers of the future and Dazed put him on their list of top 100 creative influencers of 2015. Selected clients include Gucci, Givenchy, Rick Owens, Patrick Wolf, Hercules and Love Affair, Austra, Marc Jacobs, Mykki Blanco, and Stefano Pilati. His work has been featured on Channel 4 UK and BBC and in publications, such as Dazed, Fader, and Vogue. In 2016, Matt represented PRETTYBIRD at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity panel “Make Some Room,” a collaboration with SapientNitro that discussed the entertainment industry’s lack of inclusion and access.

Matt Lambert has a gift for spearheading delicate and moving music videos, all whilst focusing on powerful topics such as gender inclusion, diversity, and sexual identity. His most awarded work, a long-form music video for Mykki Blanco’s “High School Never Ends,” presents a queer adaptation of the Shakespearean tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. The video screened at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival and was shortlisted at the 2016 CICLOPE Festival, nominated for two 2016 UKMVAs, and won “Best Cinematography in a Music Video” at the 2016 Camerimage Festival.

Matt continued his partnership with Mykki Blanco with Out of This World. The i-D web series follows Blanco as he journeys through Johannesburg, highlighting the untold stories and culture of queer artists, designers, and dancers. In late 2017, Lambert also spearheaded COVERGIRL’s rebranding with “Made in the Mirror,” a spot that announced the make-up brand’s fresh tagline #IAmWhatIMakeUp. The female empowerment piece encouraged people to wear makeup however they wished and introduced the new COVERGIRLS Ayesha Curry, Issa Rae, Shelina Moreda, Maye Musk, Katy Perry, and Massy Arias.

In addition to filmmaking, Matt maintains an immense love for fine art photography—particularly that which spotlights queer intimacy—which he often channels for his work in the world of fashion. His photo book “Keim” captures moments from gay youth culture, which he again channeled in his homopunk webzine “Vitium.” Matt released “His Sweat,” a short film that intimately observes queer sexuality down to the sweat in 2016. Currently sitting at 28 million views on YouTube, the video still remains Dazed’s and NOWNESS’ most viewed film. In 2017, he released the widely celebrated “Home,” a book highlighting safe spaces for queer youth.

In the last quarter of 2018, he teamed with Stefano Pilati to creative direct all film content, including the live stream footage for the launch of Pilati’s fashion brand “Random Identities.”

In 2019, Matt contributed a number of his photographs to “The Body Is an Instrument” benefit exhibition at the Tom of Finland Foundation. The series presents work from a number of emerging, established, and influential queer artists to demonstrate the interconnected nature of art, sex, and science.

Currently, Matt Lambert is working on his first feature film and acting as the sole creative director for Mykki Blanco while simultaneously pursuing branded filmmaking collaborations with global brands, such as Essentia and Comme des Garcons.
